Finishes

Depth of cut

Every polished floor is a decision about how far into the slab to go. The five depths below describe what the surface becomes at each stage.

Four decisions, not one

A concrete floor is decided four times

Colour

Decided at the pour

PeterFell pigment goes into the mix before the concrete is placed, with more than eighty colours plus bespoke mixes.

About colour

Aggregate

Decided at the pour

The stone in the mix, set by the concrete supplier and local supply, and able to be seeded into the surface at the pour.

Depth of cut

Decided at the grind

How far into the slab we go, which decides how much of that stone is revealed.

The five depths

Level of polish

Decided at the grind

From roughly 200 grit, a smooth matte surface, up to 3000 grit, a mirror finish, plus the sealer, which changes the final colour.

About level of polish

On an existing slab, decisions three and four are the ones still open. Colour and aggregate are already in the concrete and cannot be added later.

Sealed interior floor

Eco based sealer

Sealed polished concrete floor with deep reflection meeting a plastered wall

07Sealing

Selected against the environment

Eco based sealers are water carried, low odour and suited to occupied homes and interiors where the floor needs to be back in use quickly. Solvent based sealers carry deeper, hold colour longer and are the choice for exterior surfaces, lakefront paving and commercial floors under constant wear.

From the pour

What your finish needs from the pour

Select a finish to see the placement and finishing requirements that decide whether it can be delivered.

Salt and pepper

Lightly exposes fine aggregate while retaining much of the cement matrix.

Placement
Place as flat and level as practical.
Flatness
High areas expose aggregate faster than low areas, so flatness directly affects the final appearance.
Control joints
Wet cutting of control joints is recommended where practical, with adequate drying time before polishing or sealing.
