A few questions about the slab, so a price can be put together without a site visit.
Step 1 of 5
Grinding Dynamics polishes concrete floors across Tauranga, from single room renovations in Otumoetai to full residential slabs in Papamoa and Bethlehem, and commercial floors through the Mount and the CBD.
A polished floor is the slab itself, refined. Nothing is laid over it and nothing is glued down. The surface you walk on is the structure of the building, cut back to the depth you choose and closed with a sealer that suits the room.
What polishing does to a Tauranga slab
Diamond grinding removes the top layer of a slab in progressive steps. The first passes take off laitance, glue residue, curing compound and any high spots left by the trowel. Later passes refine what is exposed until the surface holds light.
How deep we go decides what the floor looks like. At 0mm the cement cream is retained and the floor reads as one continuous plane. At 1 to 2mm a fine salt and pepper speckle appears. Beyond 3mm the stone in the mix becomes the material and the floor takes on a terrazzo character. Tauranga slabs are commonly poured with local river aggregate, which cuts to a warm grey and pale stone at medium and heavy depths.
Because the depth is a decision rather than an accident, it should be made on a sample. We post a physical tile before any machine is booked, and on existing slabs we grind a test patch on site so you are choosing from your own concrete.
The PeterFell C2 system
Grinding Dynamics is an approved applicator of the PeterFell C2 Polished Concrete System. The system sets the densification stage, the grit sequence and the final sheen, which means the floor is delivered to a written specification rather than to whatever the operator judged on the day.
For an architect or a builder that matters at handover. The finish can be specified at the drawing stage and checked at completion. For a homeowner it means the floor in the finished house matches the sample tile that sat on the kitchen bench during the build.

The floor is the slab, refined. Nothing is laid over it.
Timing on new builds
On a new pour, polishing commences at a minimum concrete age of 28 days from the date of pour. That is a curing requirement rather than a preference, because the slab has to reach strength before the aggregate cuts cleanly instead of tearing. Provide the confirmed pour date when the works are programmed.
Where a build cannot hit that window we protect the slab, then grind at a later stage and account for the extra hardness in the grit sequence. On existing slabs, including houses forty years old, grinding can be done at any time. The variable is what sits under the surface, which is why the inspection comes first.
Living with a polished floor
A sealed polished floor is washed with a neutral pH cleaner and water. No wax, no strong acids, no bleach. Felt pads under furniture and a mat at the entry deal with most of the grit that would otherwise dull a high traffic path.
Interior floors in Tauranga homes are usually sealed with an eco based product, which is water carried, low in odour and back in service quickly. Garages, workshops and commercial floors more often take a solvent based sealer for chemical and tyre resistance.
Grinding Dynamics is an approved applicator of the PeterFell C2 Polished Concrete System. The system, its specification and its material data are published by PeterFell.

How much does polished concrete cost in Tauranga?
Price depends on the depth of cut, the size and condition of the slab and access to the site. A shallow natural polish on a clean new pour is the least involved. Heavy exposure on an old slab with glue residue takes more passes. We quote after a slab inspection.
Can an existing slab in an older Tauranga home be polished?
Usually yes. We test a small area to confirm the aggregate, hardness and any contamination before quoting. Slabs with heavy cracking or historic moisture problems are assessed case by case.
Is polished concrete slippery?
A sealed interior polished floor has similar slip performance to other hard flooring when dry. Where a surface will get wet we recommend a textured finish under the PeterFell TextureSafe System instead.
How long does the work take?
A typical residential floor of 100 to 150 square metres runs across several days including grinding, polishing, sealing and cure time. We confirm the programme against your build schedule at quoting.
