Systems

Every floor is delivered under one of two PeterFell systems. Naming the system in the specification fixes the method, the products and the acceptance criteria.

PeterFell C2
The Polished Concrete System. Governs densification, the grit sequence and the final sheen on a polished floor. Grinding Dynamics is an approved applicator.
PeterFell TextureSafe
The textured surface system. Governs the texturing method and the finishing products where a surface has to hold grip when wet. Grinding Dynamics is an approved applicator.

Depth and exposure

Depth of cut is specified as a millimetre range against a named exposure class. Aggregate revealed is a function of the mix, so the class describes intent and the sample confirms it.

0mm
Natural Polish. None. Cement cream retained.
1 to 2mm
Salt and Pepper. Fine sand and the smallest stone tips
2 to 3mm
Light Exposure. Small stone, partially cut
3 to 4mm
Medium Exposure. Stone fully cut and evenly distributed
5mm plus
Heavy Exposure. Full stone face, terrazzo character

Polish levels

Sheen is specified as a grit endpoint rather than as an adjective. The floor is taken to the agreed grit and stopped there.

200 grit
Matte, a ground finish with no reflection. Suits garages, workshops and utility floors.
400 to 800 grit
Satin, a soft sheen with light diffused rather than reflected. The most common residential choice.
1500 grit
Gloss, a clear reflection. Suits commercial and showroom floors.
3000 grit
Mirror, full reflection. Specified where the floor is a feature.

Slip resistance

Where a surface will get wet, texture is specified rather than polish, applied under the PeterFell TextureSafe System. Grip is cut into the concrete rather than applied on top of it, so it does not wear off with a coating.

A specific slip rating for a given surface is confirmed against the system documentation for that application. We do not quote a rating in the abstract, because the figure depends on the texture, the finishing products and the condition the surface is tested in.

Timing on new pours

Polishing commences at a minimum concrete age of 28 days from the date of pour. This is a curing requirement. Before that the concrete has not reached strength and the aggregate tears rather than cuts. Provide the confirmed pour date when the works are programmed.

Where a programme runs well past that point the slab is protected and ground later, with the extra hardness accounted for in the grit sequence. Raised at the drawing stage it is a planning decision rather than a variation.

Sample specification clause

Written to be lifted straight into a schedule. Square brackets are the specifier's values.

Concrete floor finish

  1. System: PeterFell [C2 Polished Concrete System / TextureSafe System], installed in full accordance with the system documentation.
  2. Depth of cut: [0mm natural polish / 1 to 2mm salt and pepper / 2 to 3mm light exposure / 3 to 4mm medium exposure / 5mm plus heavy exposure], confirmed against an approved sample.
  3. Sheen: ground and polished to [200 / 400 to 800 / 1500 / 3000] grit.
  4. Sealer: [eco based / solvent based] sealer selected for the exposure of this area, applied at the manufacturer's written rate and cure time.
  5. Applicator: approved applicator of the nominated PeterFell system. Evidence of approval to be provided with the tender.
  6. Sample: [size] sample panel prepared on the project slab and approved in writing before the main floor is commenced.

From a specifier

The terrazzo floor in the art gallery was badly damaged and we expected to replace it. Grinding Dynamics rejuvenated it instead. We intend to use them on future projects.

AliArchitectural practice

For practices

We will read a slab for you before you commit a finish to a drawing, on site or from the structural information where the pour has not happened yet. No charge and no obligation on the project.

We will also post a sample tile to the practice rather than to your client, so the material is in the office when the finishes conversation happens rather than a week after it. Tell us the depth and the sheen you are considering, or ask for a range if the decision is still open.

A slab assessment and a sample tile, sent to the practice.
